Hair Play

I really like dolls with short hair, but seldom work up the courage to cut my own dolls hair. Since I have recently kit bashed a few Skipper dolls to give them fully articulated bodies I have some extra Skippers laying around, so I decided to play with their hair.

Here are some of the haircuts I tried out:

On Flickr, I saw a picture of the new LA Girl Barbie that someone in Spain was able to purchase. Since she is not available in the US yet, I thought I would try my hand ad trying to do something similar to that haircut:

Not too bad, but I am thinking that if I cut the hair off on that side, I could flock it and she would look more like the LA Girl Barbie. Hey, if I can do this, then I wouldn't have to buy her and I would save some money!

  1. Nice... I'm all for saving money. That just means you can buy more things... hopefully cheap. Yes :-)

    1. Ladonna, yes, any dolly money I save, I seem to spend on other dolly things!

  2. Well done Phyllis! If there's one hard thing to do (at least for me) is cutting doll's hair. and cropped hairdos are the hardest of them all!

    1. I so agree, cutting doll hair is so hard. These are my first attempts where I had actually liked the results! The benefit of having extra heads is that if you mess up, you are not wasting anything since it was an extra head anyway!

  4. I like using my test dolls to cut hair. It's fun.

Your haircuts look good. I really like the two with the shorter cuts.

Pozdrawiam serdecznie!

  6. By what miracle did you get short hair to lay flat?

The longer-front/shorter-back look that you achieve on one of the dolls is excellent.

    1. I got lucky on these. I tried to follow the natural lay of their hair. On the asymetrical cut with the longer front/shorter back, the doll's hair was originally in a ponytail. I followed the rubber band mark to achieve the cut and then used a pair of texturizing scissors to shape the rest of the hair.

    1. Me too! I think Skipper's hair quality was nicer than on the Barbie in these pictures, so their haircuts turned out nicer.

  9. Great job on the haircuts! It is very hard to get a close cut, but you did a great job with the Skippers.

    1. So glad you like the cuts. The texturizing scissors helped a lot to achieve the closer layered cuts.

  10. Skipper cut is really cute. Sometimes the simplest things make our dolls look different.

    1. Isn't that the truth! Since Skipper doesn't have any friends her size in the current lineup, I wanted to find a way to use what I already had to achieve some different looking doll friends for her.

  11. Very nice! I was about to ask if you boiled them to get the hair to stay flat, but I see in the comments that it was flowing that way anyway.

  12. I love the short hair Skippers. I would love to cut some of my dolls hair, especially some of the one from the 90's....they can have an over abundance of hair. Great job!

  14. How in the world did you get it with such body? I really like the one in the black dress, but they are all great cut jobs!

  15. Wow, Phyllis, you are really brave. I'm way too scared to cut my doll's hair even though, like you, I love dolls with short hairstyles. You did a pretty good job there. I bought a doll who's hair had been cut by the previous owner. I like the cut, but the hair doesn't lay flat. Thinking of using hair gel & a stocking cap.

    1. Since I had so many Skipper heads, I figured I had nothing to lose, so that took away some of the fear factor. Another way to try and make the hair lay flatter is to remove the head from the doll's body and put it on a dowel or a chop stick. then hold the hair down by covering the head with a netting (like tulle) and holding it tight to the dowel with a rubber band. Then dip the head in boiled water like you do for a boil perm. After the hair dries, it should lay flat. Then cut the hair short.

    2. A quick update. I used extra firm hair gel and a bit of tulle tied to the head over night to keep my doll's short hairdo in place. It really works, however the hair is now stiff like the Mattel Barbies with short hair. I can always wash it out and restyle. But just wanted you to know about my experience.
