A New Year, A New Dryer!

2014 ended with a bang! Well, actually a fire. On New Year's Eve, my oldest daughter was home while my youngest and I were out getting last minute things for our family gathering which was to take place at our house on January 2nd. She had to work on New Year's Day in the morning, so she was washing her uniform. She put it in the dryer (of course) and shortly after it started, she heard a clunking noise. She ran down to the laundry room only to discover that the dryer had caught on fire! She called me frantically (we had just arrived at the store). She told me that flames were coming out of the back! I told her to call the fire department and get the heck out of the house! I then jumping back in my car and we raced home! She was worried that she would lose her uniform for work, so she had pulled out the dryer, and took her clothes out. Since she turned it off, the flame also stopped. She did call the fire department, and of course, they told her the same thing I did - - - get out of the house. By the time we arrived home, she was totally freaked out and crying. The fireman arrived shortly after I did. The flame was out, but they could see that the fire was not caused by lint, but by the bearing in the motor. They assured her that she absolutely did the right thing and that her quick thinking saved our home. The firemen removed the dryer from the house in case it was still smoldering. Since it was a holiday, we did contact the insurance company, but they did not come out until the Tuesday January 6 only to tell use that because of my daughter's quick thinking, there wasn't enough damage to cover my deductible. So all we had to do was get a new dryer! It arrived yesterday. Because of New Year's sales, we were able to get a nicer one than the old one. Here it is:

I love it! It is a new Whirlpool Duet steam dryer. Because we were without a dryer for the last week and a half, we were unable to do laundry, so I have been doing laundry yesterday and today. It is so much nicer than my old unit that I now wish we could have also gotten the companion washer. Oh well, maybe later!

We had a great holiday with my family. It was nice to see everyone, but I was also glad when everything settled down. With all of the excitement, I did not get much of a chance for any doll related stuff, but I did get some other new dolls after Christmas which I will share in my next post.

I am just happy that the fire was minor, no one was hurt and the firemen were really cute!

We did have a lovely Christmas. My daughters got me a serger for Christmas. I was pleasantly surprised. I hope to work on some new doll clothes very soon. I am looking forward to working on doll related things this year and have started working on rooms for my new story involving my Society Hound Barbie who is now Penelope Elizabeth Winthrop Carter. Her husband disappeared 2 years ago. She had 3 adult children, one brother and one sister. Their family owns a major hi tech company which employs a lot of the people in Hanaly Corners. I am working on sets for the first installment of their story. I hope you will all enjoy it!

I am looking forward to 2015 and all the new dolly related things I have planned. Here is hoping that 2015 brings all of you good health and happiness and more dollies of course!

  1. Sorry to hear about the dryer and the fire. But your daughter was brave enough to save your home. Kudos to her! Glad she's okay. Congratulations on the new dryer. Hopefully, that's the worst thing that will happen this year.

I can't wait to see the set you build.

    1. I am so proud of my daughter! Her fast acting saved our home, but more importantly, she was OK. I too hope this means the rest of the year will be a good one -- get the bad things out of the way first!

  2. Oh my! I'm so glad the fire wasn't worse than it was. It's always sad to see people lose their homes in a fire right before the holidays. New dryer looks great. Congrats on getting your serger. I have had one since 1995 and I have still yet to use it. LOL! I did get a DVD a couple months ago to teach me all about serging. Nope I haven't watched it yet, but it is loaded in my computer and waiting for that faithful day when I push the play button. Maybe this weekend. I can't wait to see all you have planned for your dollies. Sounds great!

    1. Me too, Vanessa! You should have seen me when she called. I have never driven that fast! My serger came with a DVD too, so I will be watching it soon. The new dryer is so pretty, LOL! It dries the clothes faster than my old one too --- and without burning the house down ;).

    1. Me too, on both counts. Now that we have gotten things squared away with the dryer, I can start to learn how to use the serger.

  5. Goodness! I'm glad nobody got hurt, I'm so sorry your daughter got such a fright, but she did very well at the time of the fire, she was very brave! Congratulations with the serger, it will be so handy! I look forward to your sets and stories about Penelope, I love a good old mystery with disappearing husbands :-)!

  6. So this is a bad news, good news post! WOW, I would be really scared about the fire! I'm glad to hear that no one was hurt and that there wasn't much damage. I guess you had to come out of pocket for the new dryer. Now, is this the dryer that you can steam clean (kinda) your dry cleanable clothes? That is pretty sweet! The longer I can keep some of my money in my pocket, the better. I know that many dry cleaners just "blow out" (push steam through the clothes and scent it with cleaning fragrance while charging full price) the clothes and don't really clean them. So if you can do that yourself...even better.
I was looking at a serger too. I don't know how to use it but I was looking!:-)

    1. Yes, I had to pay out of pocket for the dryer. Thank goodness for after holiday sales! They call it "Steam Refresh"! I am excited to use that feature. Haha, about LOOKING at a serger! My SIL uses her all of the time and she says once I figure it out, I will be so happy I got it!

  8. Wow, if that had happened to me (dryer catching on fire) I would've cried too :(...but yes, good, brave thinking on her part and I'm glad all is well now and everyone was safe. Getting to see cute firemen is always a plus!! :) Your new storyline sounds fabulous and I can't wait to see what you have in store for 2015. Congrats on the great new dryer as well!

  11. What a scary story! Glad it all turned out well in the end. My dryer had been clunking and making weird noises just before it stopped producing any heat. I am so glad that it never caught fire. I now know what it is like to be without a dryer. I currently have washing hanging over every doorway in our house. As soon as we have enough funds we will go and get a new one. It is good to hear that you like your new one.
    Hugs,
    Sam

    1. I got some over the door hangers to use to hand clothes for drying. That helps you hand multiple items on one door and they are not expensive! I hope you are able to get a new dryer soon. They do have some great deals out there right now!

  12. Whoa, that's scary! I'm glad your house was ok and your daughter didn't hurt herself saving her uniform. And here I thought the worst a tumbler could do was shrink your socks...
