My First Attempt at Hair Flocking and Other News

I have seen others transform their dolls by removing the factory hair and flocking new hair on. When I saw a tutorial on YouTube: How to Turn OHC Girl into a Boy - Flocking Tutorial
I decided to give it a try my self.

I have multiples of the Happy Family Grandma dolls, so to make them look differently, I have done some different hair treatments for them. I had purchased a long grey wig for another doll and after cutting it to a shorter length, I had quite a bit of hair left over. I used this to make my flocking. I also decided that she needed a nice looking mature fellow as her partner, so I took an extra Finnick doll I had purchased at a discount to use as a body donor and gave him some flocking as well. Below is the couple out for their wedding anninversary:

Happy Family Grandma with a "mature" Finnick as her husband!

All dressed up for their anniversary!
I also wanted to give her more mobility since her man is very mobile, so I did a leg transplant on her.  See her new legs:

Her new legs gives her a new lease on life! She can really kick up her heels now!

Her husband likes them too!
After seeing how well the flocking experiment worked out, I decided to give my AA Happy Family Grandma a new man too. So I took the head of an AA University Ken doll whose body had already been snatched and put it on a tall COO Model body. I left his current flocking intact, but added my salt and pepper grey flocking to his head and face too. Check out this guy!

Here they are! Grandma has been rebodied on an AA Liv body. I also gave her hair a trim. She is the younger sister of my other AA Happy Family Grandma who is married to AA Happy Family Grandpa

Here is a closer look at his face. I noticed that some of his beard rubbed off, but that will be easy to fix!

I also purchased the Disney Athena character from Tomorrowland. I thought she would look good as my Katie Lamm's little sister (my Lammily doll). What do you think? I still need to give her a name.

That's all for now!

  1. Wow, Phyllis! The flocking came out great, especially on the grandma. It's a really nice look for her.

Some of my girls and guys need parents. I may give it a try. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Great job on the flocking!

Your doll makes a great match to being Katie's little sister.

  4. I love your creativity, Phyllis! I haven't done any body swaps, but it's in the works for sure. There are so many pretty Fashionistas with those stiff bodies that they are no fun because they can't be posed as well. I am trying to figure out if there are any bodies that would be good substitues for Skipper and Stacie? Also, that is great to hear you can do a leg swap only as some of our Barbies have all 3 points of articulation in the arms, but stiff legs. I'll have to look up a tutorial! I think the Athena doll looks great as your Lamiliy's little sister. :) Maybe her body would be good for a Barbie Stacie doll?

    1. Thanks! I have become pretty good at body swapping! I don't like stiff bodies. The new Fashionistas have great faces, but I hate that they have no articulation. And the dolls with the swayed hips can barely even sit! I have used some Pure Neemo bodies for Skipper and Stacie. They do have some darker skin tones and come in various sized. I have also used Obitsu, but the color match is difficult with those. Depending on the type of leg attachment, some leg swaps are easier than others. Athena's body is somewhat limited in articulation and her legs are the click knee, but these are better than stiff legs. She also bends at the elbows. Good luck!

  5. Ohh, and also, have you seen the new Barbie Made to Move dolls? They have better articulation that Liv dolls! I just ordered one from Amazon ($14.99) and I'm so excited to see her. :)

    1. Yes, I have! I already ordered and have received all 3 of them. I love them! I ordered some extras to have for body swapping! Their joints are quite sturdy and they can pose in so many positions. I will be posting a review soon!

  6. Wow, those flocked beards really worked out well! I've been putting off a couple of flocking projects our of fear, but seeing your success may be the inspiration I need to get back to it!

Love the face on that Tomorrowland doll - I've never noticed that line before - what are the bodies like?

    1. Thanks! Not bad for my first attempt! I got the Tomorrowland doll at Disneystore.com. Her articulation is ok, but not stellar. She has joints at the elbows and has a torso joint. She is also jointed at the neck, shoulders and hips and had click knees. Not too bad for this size of doll, but I was hoping for a little better. It works well enough though, so I will not be trying to rebody her.

  9. Again, another wonderful post. Your senior dolls look wonderful with the flocking. Thank you so much for the link which was very timely. Was chatting with someone on Twitter who quoted Ellen Degeneres who said she'd like to see a Barbie with a buzz cut. I just might try this!! It looks so modern!!!

    1. Glad you liked them. I would love to see what you do! I think flocking the beard was easier than coloring one on and it looks more realistic!

  11. BTW, how tall is Athena? Is she Skipper or Stacie size?

    1. Athena is a little bit shorter than Skipper and quite a bit taller than Stacie. I will probably make her be about the same age or a little younger than Skipper.
