What a Week!

I wanted to do my final post about going to the IT Convention in Chicago, but, as "luck" would have it, life interfered. Where to start??? First my computer crashed. I thought I might be able to bring it back up, but no such luck. After running some diagnostics on it, I got the message that the hard drive could not be found. Not to be completely deterred, I took it too the computer store to have them take a look at it. They confirmed that the hard drive was fried! Yuck!! The gave me a quote on getting a new hard drive installed, but, because of the age of the computer, the cost of the drive and other parts plus labor was pretty steep. I decided that rather than spend the money on fixing the old one and still not being able to recover my files, that it made more sense to get a new one. I did a bit of research and picked up a new computer yesterday. I am back to functioning, but I need to get everything set back up. Luckily, I have online accounts for most of my software so was able to download most of the software. This does take a bit of time though! I hope to be downloading some photos for Halloween by the end of the day!

The weather here in Michigan got cold last week (we even had some snow). I woke up to a very cold house (60 degrees!). I played a little with the thermostat to see if maybe it was that, but no such luck. My furnace was definitely not working. I called a repairman. He gave me some options, but recommended that I get a new furnace. After some investigation, I decided that this would be the best course of action. The repairman was able to get us up and running temporarily and I will be getting the new furnace installed on Monday. Because I am getting a new furnace from them, they subtracted the cost of the repairs on the old furnace from the cost of the new one and gave me a Senior discount. One of the perks of growing old!

Good thing I bought a lot of dolly stuff in Chicago -- I won't have much budget for anything for quite a while. I might even decide to sell a few dolls too.

Well, that is it for now. Hope to be back up and running soon!

Have a great dolly day!

Phyllis

  1. Oh my, it seems the stars were definitely on the wrong side of the sky! (Mercury retrograde, I think it's called!) I had a weird day last week too--internet and land phone went out for no reason......my anti virus not working. Fortunately everything is back in order. But looking at your story is a reminder for me to update backing up my files!!!

    1. The saying, "When it rains, it pours!" certainly does appy here! I am now scheduling more frequent backups too!

  2. How unfortunate! Take care of your health while you get everything up and running again.

    1. Ah, yes, my health is a whole other matter! I am doing my best to stay positive about things and trying to get more exercise, rest appropriately and still have some family fun! Good news I am now 5 years cancer free and that goes a long way to bring up my spirits!

  3. Oh, Phyllis, I'm sorry this all had to happen at one time. Glad you were able to get both problems solved quickly, though. You are very fortunate in that regard.

    1. I have learned how to take things in stride. After all, no amount of crying or worrying is going to change things. I have learned to try to take things more in stride. You may remember that the in the last 2 Christmas's, first my dryer and then my washer decided to die. I got the new ones at Best Buy using the 18 months same as cash credit option. I divided my payment into 12 equal monthly payment, so the dryer was paid off before I had to get the washer! I did the same with the washing machine and now only have 2 more months on it. So without increasing my monthly payments, I can get the computer paid off in about 6 months using the same 18 months same as cash. I do try to keep thing paid off, so things don't get so bad. Being on a fixed income now, I had to learn to do that! I now worry more now about what this presidential election is going to do to us senior citizens!

  4. Oh, no Phyllis. I really hate that. I am glad that you were able to purchase a computer and get a new furnace, especially after all of the fun that was had in Chicago.

    1. Thanks, Olla! The furnace guy was so nice that he even got my gas fireplace running and fixed my water filter free of charge while he was here! So we will be warm and cozy this winter while playing with our dolls and enjoying the nice new faster computer!

  7. I hate when that happens, everything seems to hit at one time. But you can look at your dolls and feel happy you got them before this happened. It's good you were able to get what you needed.

    1. I know, Jaye, when it rains, it pours! I do keep a little cash set aside for emergencies, but I have now depleted it. Just have to work on getting that funded again.

  8. Wow! When it rains it pours. Sorry to hear about your computer and furnace. All in the same week, too! That is brutal. Losing a computer is hard enough, just by itself. Good thing this all happened after Chicago. I would have hated to see something like this ruin your trip.

  11. Isn't it annoying that these things always seem to happen together and not separately when you've had a chance to recover from the first calamity? Glad to hear you can take deal with it and you have your dollies to play with.

    1. Yes, it is annoying! I have learned to kind of roll with the punches. It doesn't do any good to get too upset because that doesn't help solve the problem!
